As our Urban Forestry Supervisor, you will play a key role in shaping and leading our new Urban and Community Forestry program. This position requires a dynamic leader who can plan, organize, and implement training programs for youth ages 16-24, combining both curriculum-based learning and hands-on experience. You will collaborate with community partners to identify and carry out projects, ensuring that all activities are conducted safely and effectively.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to help design and build the program from the ground up, making a meaningful contribution to the development of our youth and the sustainability of our urban environment. Your leadership will ensure that members are properly supervised and receive the training they need to succeed.

Job Summary 

Under the direction and supervision of the Program Director, the Urban Forestry Supervisor is responsible for training youth ages 16 -24 years in the Urban and Community Forestry program, providing training and oversight during their learning process and ensuring both curriculum and hands-on learning occurs.  The Urban Forestry Supervisor is responsible for collaborating with community partners to plan and safely carry out identified projects, while ensuring that members are properly supervised and instructed while onsite. 

 

Primary Responsibilities

 

  • Complete training to become certified to teach in Roots of Success curriculum, as well as other certifications as identified through the course of the grant period.
  • Actively participate in all phases of the project identification, planning and execution for each cohort.
  • Participate in recruitment activities for cohorts.
  • Teach the identified curriculum, ensuring fidelity to the course content and providing opportunities to discuss and/or apply information learned for members in a practical way.
  • Responsible for modeling and always ensuring safety onsite and at offsite work sites.
  • Teach conservation-focused skills to young adults ages 16 to 24 years, including the proper use in handling of all tools, materials and equipment, along with adhering to requirements regarding the use of all personal protective equipment (PPE) by members.
  • Monitor student progress towards identified certifications.
  • Responsible for the conservation project site, maintaining and enforcing safety, developing and maintaining project plans and working collaboratively with all worksite partners.
  • Work collaboratively with program team to identify and provide resources for members in need, as well as provide opportunities for placement upon completion of program.
  • Maintain a working member file with member goals, activities and communication logs. As needed, but at a minimum, upon exit, transfer information into main member file.
  • Participate in field trips to construction employers/unions and construction-based job placement.
  • Keep track of all tools and equipment used at the job site and within YCC facilities daily.
  • Responsible for project management of conservation worksites in collaboration with Program Director and worksite partners.
  • Serve as a positive mentor and role model to the youth members.

Other Responsibilities: 

  • Complete timely entry into the member database regarding unit test and certification completion.
  • Provide member transport to work sites, training sites and any required activity.
  • Obtain OSHA teaching certification and participate in OSHA 10 instruction for members as needed.
  • Communicate with the public on the agency’s mission and values and represent YCC, in a professional manner at all times.
  • Serve as a member of the YCC program staff team by sharing ideas and concerns regarding member success and program quality.
  • Works in harmony with all YCC staff, volunteers, contractors, customers, and community partners.
  • Attend training relevant to job role, which may include national conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Organizational Relationships

Supervised by:  Program Director

Supervises: Youth members in the Urban and Community Forestry Program

Internal:  All departmental personnel that are employed by YCC.

External:  Members, The Corps Network, community and worksite partners, general public, contractors, city and county officials, job centers, employment centers, regulatory and licensing agencies, county, state and federal representatives and all organizations that interact with YCC.

 

Professional Background and Qualifications

Education

High school diploma or GED required.  A bachelor’s degree or higher in forestry, conservation, environmental sciences, or a related field is strongly preferred.  

Experience and Qualifications

  • Two years of hands-on conservation, and forestry experience is strongly preferred
  • A minimum of two years working with youth (16 -24 years old)
  • Project management experience
  • Successful completion of criminal background checks, including but not limited to fingerprinting, National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) and state police background check
  • Workforce readiness experience strongly preferred

Physical Abilities   

  • Ability to lift and/or move at least 70 pounds using proper body mechanics
  • Visual acuity to read a computer screen and other documents
  • Ability to utilize a telephone and respond to callers
  • Ability to work in a variety of conditions
 

Additional Duties

  • Develop an understanding of The Corps Network, YouthBuild, and AmeriCorps programs and philosophy and be able to effectively communicate that to potential members and their families.
  • Participate in recruitment activities and assist in answering questions regarding the YCC programs.
  • Maintain confidentiality of member information as it relates to the program. 
  • Demonstrate respect for all members.
  • Actively participate in organization and program staff meetings.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with members of the program staff team to ensure that documentation needs are met.
